Brainspotting Therapy Approach

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting (BSP) is a brain- and body-focused psychotherapy approach developed by David Grand, PhD. It is designed to help individuals process distressing experiences and the emotions connected to them. The approach is based on the understanding that emotionally overwhelming experiences can become deeply embedded within the brain and nervous system, continuing to influence thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and behaviors.

Leslie Baker is a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner who integrates Brainspotting into treatment when it is clinically appropriate and aligned with each client’s goals. Brainspotting uses the connection between eye position, the brain, and the body. During a session, therapist and client work together to identify a specific eye position, called a brainspot, that corresponds with the issue or emotion being explored.

A body experience refers to the physical sensations that accompany emotions or memories, such as a knot in the stomach, tightness in the chest or throat, muscle tension, butterflies, or a feeling of calm and warmth. These sensations provide valuable information about how the nervous system is responding.

An eye position is simply where your eyes are directed. Your therapist will gently guide your gaze while inviting you to notice your thoughts, emotions, and body sensations. This helps identify the eye position that is most closely connected to the issue you are working on.

Once a brainspot has been identified, you are encouraged to mindfully observe your internal experience while maintaining that eye position. This process supports the brain and nervous system’s natural ability to process unresolved experiences. As processing occurs, many clients report a reduction in emotional distress, greater insight, improved emotional regulation, and a feeling that previously overwhelming memories become more manageable.

Every person’s experience with Brainspotting is unique. Leslie will discuss whether Brainspotting is an appropriate treatment option for your individual needs and will answer any questions you may have before beginning the process.
