By Leslie Baker, MA, Marriage and Family Therapist Pleasanton

“Sexting” is a current trend among an increasing number of teens. It becomes a global teen issue. It involves texting sexual information (photos or words) to one another. Recent studies show almost 50 % of all teens participate in “sexting,” risking social and legal repercussions.

Illegal Risk

The National Campaign published a recent study that compiled statistics from a 2008 research study of Sex and Tech behavior among teens. It reported that 20% of teenagers overall have sent or posted nude or seminude pictures or video of themselves. The study also showed 39% of all teenagers are sending or posting sexually suggestive messages to each other.

Teens are at risk legally and socially by sending illicit information over the Internet or by cell phones. Teens who get caught, can be prosecuted as sex offenders. If this happens, they may then be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of their lives.

Preventing these risky behaviors is an important concern for parents, teens and communities. Providing resources to teens to assist them in understanding and preventing “sexting” behavior can help protect their futures.

Personal Value

Two concepts that have been useful in helping to teach youth how to stay safe are the concepts of personal value and “no secrets.” These concepts were pioneered by Jan Hindman, an expert in the field of trauma recovery.

Teaching personal value is important in preventing abuse. Hindman says that children need to value their bodies like their material possessions, such as cell phones, in this case. They will be more likely to take care of their bodies and be more respectful toward themselves and others.

Teens seem to have an innate instinct to protect their cell phones and other electronic devices. Communicating this level of value and respect regarding their bodies can assist teens in making better choices about posting and texting. Teaching teens about personal value is an important beginning toward protecting them.

No Secrets

Increasing teens’ sense of personal value can also enable them to tell someone about abuse. Teens often tell when their cell phones or computers are taken or broken. Helping teens to develop a “no secrets” policy regarding Internet and text abuse is crucial.

Keeping secrets allows the offenders to keep on abusing. Teens can be taught that secrets can hurt and that breaking the silence can help in preventing more problems.

Parents need to be open to teens’ opinions by fostering a community of listening. Ask them how they might handle themselves in a situation involving “sexting.” This can help build strategies that they can implement on their own.

What Lasts Forever

Creating an atmosphere of openness and support is helpful in allowing youth to speak out when problems arise. Ask teens for input on how they are dealing with texting and online use. Educate them about the pitfalls of texting and posting online.

Information lasts forever.

Posting and texting can affect futures (jobs and reputations).

Think before posting or texting.

Helping teens value themselves as they value their cell phones is a useful place to start. Communication about personal value and no secrets is a first step in prevention. Take time to have a discussion, read a book or share information provided by the health education program at school. Online resources such as The National Campaign are also available to parents to help with how to start discussions about these challenging topics.

By Jill Elaine Hughes, discussion with Leslie Baker Marriage and Family Therapist Pleasanton

Online dating is an integral part of contemporary culture — sitcoms refer to it to grab laughs, and commercials for online dating sites populate the airwaves. Some recent studies, however, indicate that singles are frustrated with online dating and looking for alternatives.

“A lot of people find online dating intriguing but not very satisfying,” says Leslie Baker, a couple counselor and therapist in Pleasanton and an area chair for the master’s in counseling degree program at University of Phoenix.

Many of Baker’s individual and couples counseling clients report that they currently use online dating sites but are disappointed with the results. One problem, according to Baker, is that sites don’t screen member profiles.

“My clients like the opportunity to look at profiles of people they wouldn’t ordinarily get to meet, but they have to sift through a lot of questionable ones to find anything, and then those people often do not respond,” she says. “There also seems to be a problem with people posting false information and fake photos on dating sites.”

The very reason people are initially attracted to online dating sites can also be what ultimately drives them away, Baker says. “I treat clients with social phobias and social anxiety disorders, and many people with these disorders thrive on online relationships because they take off the pressure of actually having to meet others face to face,” she says.

The relative safety and anonymity of online dating can be both a good and a bad thing. “In some ways, online dating and social media can connect people, but it can also facilitate shallow relationships or virtual relationships where people never actually meet,” Baker says. The shallowness contributes, she believes, to the level of dissatisfaction many people eventually develop with online dating.

These are some of the potential pitfalls to online dating, but is it really dying out? Not entirely, according to Baker. “I think people are just searching for better results, and that’s why you’re seeing a lot of niche dating sites cropping up,” she says.

Singles should also explore other dating options, Baker recommends. “I frequently suggest that my clients consider using in-person dating services that offer a way for people to mingle safely with other singles in a public place,” Baker says. “One of my favorites is Table for Six, which sets up dinners with three single men and three single women, coordinated through a hostess. I also suggest It’s Just Lunch, a service that sets up weekday lunches between working professionals.”

These types of services offer the potential variety of online dating while also encouraging real-world interaction. “You really don’t know someone,” Baker says, “until you’ve met that person face to face.”

Bullying

An age-old trauma for school-age children in hallways and cafeterias, bullying continues its reign of terror. The forms and incidences of bullying, which include cruelty, exclusion, and rumormongering, have grown with the inclusion of cyberbullying now in the mix. According to the research by Hinduja & Patchin, (2018), students between the ages of 12 to 17 who were either bullied at school or online reported significantly more suicidal thoughts. The youth who experienced both school bullying and online bullying reported more suicidal thoughts and attempts. Lastly, the students who were bullied online in a way that impacted them at school suffered an increased risk of both suicidal thinking and attempts.

Understanding the effects of bullying is critical; it’s particularly insidious in childhood because it disrupts brain development, impacting self-regulation and the ability to build healthy relationships in adulthood. According to the National Academy of Science (2018) summary, “regardless of the mechanism, being bullied seems to have an impact on mental health functioning during adulthood.” The study also noted that:

…the effects of being bullied on the brain are not yet fully understood, there are changes in the stress response systems and in the brain that are associated with increased risk of mental health problems, cognitive function, self-regulation, and other physical problems (Conclusion 4.3). (para. 19)

Traumatic experience, like those noted in Acute Childhood Experience Scores (ACE Study), links childhood traumatic events to later serious health problems and to emotional and social difficulties such as depression and suicidal behaviors. Trauma in childhood impacts self-regulation and connection formation throughout a child’s life span changing the brain and the body.

Mitigating the Effects of Bullying

Multimodal Play Therapy Intervention incorporates Integrated Play Therapy Theory, Neuro-Sequential Model of Therapeutics by Dr. Bruce Perry, and moderate exposure training via experiential play therapy techniques such as down-regulation training with intervention including meditation, drawing, sandtray, and drama play. Multimodal Play Therapy Intervention assists trauma survivors to down regulate the stress system with mindfulness practices. Drawing desensitizes via moderate-to-prolonged exposure training and drama play leads to discovering and developing ways to move forward in connection with body movement. Throughout the process of the multimodal approach, these interventions assist in increasing the window of tolerance for traumatized clients and provide an opportunity for their brains to reintegrate trauma from a bottom up developmental neuro-sequential approach through the experiential play and expressive modalities. (Part 1 of 3)

Introduction to Technology Integrated Multimodal Play Therapy

Share with the client that over the next fmy to ten sessions the client will process their bullying trauma with the Multimodal Play Therapy Intervention. It involves the use of three different types of technology to allow a client to interact with the moderate-to-prolonged exposure to their choice of a bullying incident at their pace. They have the option to stop at anytime or to switch to the none technology option.

A Stepped Approach: Overview of Multimodal Play Therapy Intervention

Safety and downregulating with mediation/relaxation.

Drawing a scene from their choice of a bullying incident.

Creating a Virtual Sandtray®© of the bullying incident (iPad or iPhone).

Creating a drama play of the bullying incident with the Thera-Tool™ Figure or large toys.

Each session includes the option for the downregulation as needed and includes witnessing, supporting and processing by the clinician.

Step I Choose Bullying Incident

Have client choose a bullying incident that has been troubling them. If there are more than one, pick the first incident or the one that has been the most difficult for the client.

Step II Create Safety and Down Regulate

Introduce MUSE™ meditation application to assist the client with self-regulation.

The MUSE system is a medical grade EEG device that allows the client to listen to mindful mediation sounds and to simultaneously, on their phone app, track their ability to downregulate themselves and/or meditate. The objective is to slow their brain waves into a relaxed state. The client places the MUSE headband across their forehead and behind their ears. MUSE syncs up with their phone app and the session begins. The client can choose which sounds appeal to them, from ocean, forest etc.

The more they relax their brain and settle into a meditative state the quieter the sound of the storm and the more the client will hear little chirping birds fly by. The client and therapist can decide on the amount of time to try the MUSE application from as little as three minutes to more depending on the amount of time that suits a client’s need to downregulate. The MUSE app allows the client to see their progress in their ability to downregulate themselves and to see their progress. MUSE provides biofeedback for clients to see the progress they can make in self-regulation.

Step III Draw it Out

Invite my client to draw the bullying incident on the Computer/tablet or phone.

Witness as my client draws and invite them to share their story. It is important not to name or guess at the client’s creation. Let the client lead you and express what they have created if they so choose. They may choose to lend voice to a figure they have drawn or remain silent. As a clinician, remain open and supportive but refrain from interpretation. Rather be open to their interpretation if they offer one. Explore their emotional state and expressions as they offer them.

You are processing their bullying experience and you may offer the MUSE for downregulating as needed.

Clients may choose to draw one picture or over one to two sessions draw a few scenes that reflect their bullying experience. For the purpose of this modality you will have them choose one of the incidents they experienced to use throughout the rest of the process.

A clinician will need a Windows /Mac/ iPad /iPhone or Android to provide a drawing surface. A free drawing app like MediBang Paint will do a great job. A larger surface is preferable. Nothing complicated unless you are planning on doing more Art therapy-type interventions. A drawing pen is very helpful, which can be purchased separately depending on the device you own. Some will allow fingers as a pen, or special tip on a traditional pen can work well with some programs.

Step IV: Virtual Sandtray®© Creation and Processing

Invite my client to re-create the bullying incident they have chosen from drawing session(s) in the Virtual Sandtray. Choosing figures and other elements they wish to create the scene they are thinking about. A clinician should expect a change from what the client may have drawn. Metaphor often enters here but also may not show up, it really depends on the client.

Witness as my client works in the Virtual Sandtray and invite them to share their story. As in the drawing sessions, it is important not to name or guess at the client’s creation. Let the client lead you and express what they have created in the Virtual Sandtray if they so choose. They may choose to lend voice to a figure they have placed in the Virtual Sandtray or remain silent. As a clinician, remain open and supportive but refrain from interpretation. Rather be open to their interpretation if they offer one. Explore their emotional state and expressions as they offer them. You can ask “What is the title for my Virtual Sandtray?” and/or “What is the moral of my Virtual Sandtray?” or “What is my Virtual Sandtray trying to show others?”

Clients may choose to create one Virtual Sandtray over one to two sessions and/or create a few Virtual Sandtrays that reflect their bullying experience(s).

Step V: Play It Out

Invite my client to re-create the bullying incident they have chosen from tablet drawing(s) or the Virtual Sandtray session(s) and dramatize it into live form dramatic play. For other characters, the client can utilize the Thera-Tool™ Figure as well as assign a role to the clinician. Large stuffed animals, puppets or inflatable animals can also be used as props if needed. Material provides an inexpensive way for the client to dress up and provide dress up for their characters. I recommend a basket of material 1½- 2-yard pieces in red, black, royal blue, green, pink and brown and two shear materials. I recommend various sizes of 2’wide to 1½ yard strips for tying material around themselves or the characters. The material serves as capes, covers, dresses and drapes for the client and the characters in their drama play. The ties also become several props, from blind folds to masks to various other props depending on the client’s imagination.

1) Minimize Eye Contact

In the age of computers and social media it is clear that talking to teens would be better if you do not attempt to make too much eye contact with them! One successful strategy has been only to hold conversations in person with no eye contact. This can be successfully completed conversing in the car, watching TV or while cooking dinner.

2) Talking to Teens Through Texting Really Works

Discover what teens have been trying to tell us long ago. Texting requires no eye contact and for the most part, teens do read texts! I find teens are relatively responsive as long as texts are short and to the point. Guard against TMI (too much information) and keep requests to 1 or a maximum of 2.

3) Post it on Instagram

If reading a text is not working a picture is worth a thousand words. A photo of dirty dishes left by your teen or a pile of dirty laundry can be an effective tool to engage chore completion with no words or eye contact needed.

4) SnapChat my LOVE

Teens are often hard to hug and express my love and parental affection to although they still appreciate it and need it! Try sending a SnapChat of a Hersey’s Kiss or a Heart on a Post It Note! Not as warm as a hug but it has the added benefit of disappearing in 10 seconds (if they do not take a screen shot) so your teen will not be embarrassed and no one will ever know how much they are loved!

5) Tweet Your Teen

If all non-eye contact options have not been effective, feel free to Tweet your teen! I have two options here. The first is to cut out a paper blue bird shape, writing my message on it and hang it on their bedroom wall! I received mix reviews from your teens. “Mom, I do not think you really get this Tweeting thing!!!” Then I finally got a twitter account and sent a real Tweet #noeyecontact and #momluvsu!

“Sexting” is a current trend among an increasing number of teens. It involves texting sexual information (photos or words) to one another. Recent studies show almost 50 % of all teens participate in “sexting,” risking social and legal repercussions.

Teens are at risk legally and socially by sending illicit information over the Associateet or by cell phones.

Increasing teens’ sense of personal value can also enable them to tell someone about abuse. Teens often tell when their cell phones or computers are taken or broken. Helping teens to develop a “no secrets” policy regarding Associateet and text abuse is crucial.
