Couples Issues and Negotiation Skills for Couples

For many couples arguing becomes the primary focus of their relationship, leaving the nurturing, fun and joyful aspects of their relationship behind. It is a very common couples issue. Developing strategies to manage couples issues and conflict can strengthen your relationshipand allow you to move forward toward positive change.

The following three steps can help you create a “couple communications” strategy to manage couples issues:

Each of you must understand my own needs as an individual. Develop lists of my individual wants, needs and desires as a way to understand what you what my partner might need. Be specific. For example, if you need alone time, state what that consists of and how much time you need. If more family time is desired, specify what constitutes family time for you.

Determine which items you can take care of individually, remembering that you were two individuals before you came together as a couple and that each has different needs and desires. Allowing each other to pursue my own individual activities can bring richness and discovery to my couple-hood, facilitating strength and interest for both partners.

Review my lists for items that are couple focused, items that you prefer to do together or can be shared, such as household chores and family activities. Provide detail, including the how and the when. Once you have developed my lists, each partner may choose two items to present to the other partner. Review my requests and negotiate with each other regarding how to reach the goals you have outlined.

Remember that any successful negotiation benefits from both partners being well rested and fed before the conversation begins, at time that works for both. Each person makes his or her requests and negotiates regarding how to facilitate reaching the goals.

Keep the discussion focused on the specifics of that request. Avoid discussing or bringing up any other couples issues. Create a timeline and be willing to try new suggestions. For example, if a partner would like to go out more but money is an issue, consider going out for an appetizer and then cooking dinner at home or taking a picnic to a spot you both enjoy. Once an issue has been agreed upon, try it out. Then, listen to the next issue.

Identifying individual wants, needs and desires is useful tool in assisting couples in meeting their own needs in their partnership. Communicating your needs in an effective, focused manner can allow you to set up specific goals and meet them. These strategies can be useful in avoiding unwanted arguments and resolving concerns so that couples can focus more on the joys of being together!

By Leslie Baker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Pleasanton

Current economic news is influencing more than bank accounts; it is also affecting couples’ relationships. Looking for tips on marriage counseling for couples facing this situation? In recent times of prosperity, couples worked hard and played hard, often creating debt as they focused on getting out, going somewhere special or buying something new. Since the economic downturn, many people now face limited funds for recreation and the realities of losing investments and even homes. Increased debt adds stress in their relationships. Financial problems are sending many a relationship into a downturn, along with the economy, but it is possible to use the economic downturn to affect my relationships in a positive way. Tough financial times can be the perfect time to reconnect.

Many people struggle with lack of connection, feelings of loneliness and conflict in their relationships. Often partners wish to spend more time together but sacrifice it because of work and other family responsibilities. They believe that money enables them “connect” and use it to deal with their anxiety and develop their relationships. In this new economy, couples have the opportunity to create a new way of connecting around each other, rather than around bank accounts, and bring joy back into their relationships.

Having more time can be a first step toward building stronger relationships, but time together can bring its own challenges. Many couples become over focused on problems and spend too much time discussing them.

Communication is important, but too much can create an environment of constant crisis. A more useful strategy that I usually provide during a marriage counseling is to limit the “problem” conversations to times when both partners are rested and to focus those discussions on specific goals and to negotiate toward specific solutions. For example, a couple may sit down once a week to review and prioritize bills. Partners can make lists of their individual priorities and then negotiate toward creating a workable list. Once the list is set into motion, the “problem” conversation can be set aside and the rest of the time can be spent on activities that are stress free and fun.

Tips for low-cost fun can involve getting involved in my community, attending free or low-cost activities like park naturalist classes, walking festivals, outdoor concerts, local sporting events or lectures. These activities afford the opportunity to reconnect not only with each other but with family, friends and neighbors. Couples may want to organize a pot luck or progressive dinner including board games, dominos or cards or create a romantic evening just for the two of you. A few candles, music and a hot bath can bring the joy back into a relationship as well as relax the stress away.
Taking care of yourself and my partner is a good investment no matter the state of the economy. Marriage and relationships present many challenges and learning how to navigate those challenges is the core of couples’ ultimate success and happiness. During this economic downturn, take the opportunity to create an upturn in my marriage and relationship.

Valentine’s Day, the day of celebrating “love” was declared February 14 around 498 A.D. by Pope Gelasius. Rituals like Valentine’s Day are important for building connections in relationships. The process of acknowledging and affirming the importance of a relationship can be a crucial element for building stronger bonds. Developing rituals that are celebrated throughout the year is an effective strategy toward deeper meaning and friendship.

Valentine’s Day is a ritual that formalizes the acknowledgement of the love and connection people feel about their significant others. Canary, D. J., Stafford, L., Hause, K. S., & Wallace, L. A. (1993) noted that joint activities are viewed as the strategy most important in maintaining relationships. Rituals can encompass many different activities in a relationship including:

Couples time – Enjoyable activities shared together including hobbies, meals and mutually shared interests.

Symbolic Rituals – Rituals that mark celebrations of birthdays, holidays. This also includes rituals that include pet names and play rituals.

Daily routines and tasks – Morning and evening rituals, bedtime, and other daily rituals.

Intimacy expressions – Rituals in both emotional and physical intimacy.

Communication rituals – Sharing, supporting, and venting rituals.

Spiritual rituals – Personal and community rituals.

Bruess and Pearson (1997; 2002)

Couples create meaningful rituals by sharing with each other what is important to them. Make time to sit down with my partner to discuss what rituals are currently shared in the relationship and what new rituals can be created. Listening to each partner’s needs and integrating those needs into the ritual development can assist in the creation of satisfying rituals. When establishing a ritual it is important to be specific: What would you like to have as a ritual? How will you carry it out? When will you participate in the ritual?

Valentine’s Day comes once a year but couples can create and maintain a meaningful connection throughout the year by practicing their own special rituals on a regular basis. Whether it’s going on a date night once a week or sharing a cup of coffee and the newspaper in the morning or going to the farmers market every Saturday, rituals help us develop closeness and create shared meaning in my lives. Consider creating a day of “love” beyond this Valentine’s Day!

By Jill Elaine Hughes, discussion with Leslie Baker Marriage and Family Therapist Pleasanton

Online dating is an integral part of contemporary culture — sitcoms refer to it to grab laughs, and commercials for online dating sites populate the airwaves. Some recent studies, however, indicate that singles are frustrated with online dating and looking for alternatives.

“A lot of people find online dating intriguing but not very satisfying,” says Leslie Baker, a couple counselor and therapist in Pleasanton and an area chair for the master’s in counseling degree program at University of Phoenix.

Many of Baker’s individual and couples counseling clients report that they currently use online dating sites but are disappointed with the results. One problem, according to Baker, is that sites don’t screen member profiles.

“My clients like the opportunity to look at profiles of people they wouldn’t ordinarily get to meet, but they have to sift through a lot of questionable ones to find anything, and then those people often do not respond,” she says. “There also seems to be a problem with people posting false information and fake photos on dating sites.”

The very reason people are initially attracted to online dating sites can also be what ultimately drives them away, Baker says. “I treat clients with social phobias and social anxiety disorders, and many people with these disorders thrive on online relationships because they take off the pressure of actually having to meet others face to face,” she says.

The relative safety and anonymity of online dating can be both a good and a bad thing. “In some ways, online dating and social media can connect people, but it can also facilitate shallow relationships or virtual relationships where people never actually meet,” Baker says. The shallowness contributes, she believes, to the level of dissatisfaction many people eventually develop with online dating.

These are some of the potential pitfalls to online dating, but is it really dying out? Not entirely, according to Baker. “I think people are just searching for better results, and that’s why you’re seeing a lot of niche dating sites cropping up,” she says.

Singles should also explore other dating options, Baker recommends. “I frequently suggest that my clients consider using in-person dating services that offer a way for people to mingle safely with other singles in a public place,” Baker says. “One of my favorites is Table for Six, which sets up dinners with three single men and three single women, coordinated through a hostess. I also suggest It’s Just Lunch, a service that sets up weekday lunches between working professionals.”

These types of services offer the potential variety of online dating while also encouraging real-world interaction. “You really don’t know someone,” Baker says, “until you’ve met that person face to face.”

Some are very tense, even hard to bear; some are moderate and might be tolerable. But they all lead to stressful and negative interpersonal experiences. A good relationship between couples is essential for lifelong interpersonal happiness.

What benefits can people get from couple therapy?

1. An effective and positive communication pattern between couples

]This is the most important outcome you can expect from couple therapy. Communication is not just talking, telling, or lecturing, and it is never a monologue. It is a reciprocal process that always involves positive listening, an active response, clarification, feedback, and adjustment.
Some people believe that because we’ve been together for so long and share similar interests and habits, she (he) should know what I’m thinking, and she (he) knows even if I don’t say anything. Poor communication patterns can sow many hidden dangers in marital life. Many couples produce conflict, mutual blame, suspicion, and even extramarital affairs. A very important reason is the long-term ineffective communication caused by the decline in the quality of marriage.

Love is a miracle emotion that is soft and vulnerable but flexible and strong too. It always attaches to another human being and requires being secure enough to be soft and strong enough to hold vulnerability for both self and the other. In couples, secure and strong enough emotional bonding means a safe place to turn to when one gets hurt and needs soothing and rest.

When couples feel emotionally unsafe, they automatically start a mode of “fight, flight, or freeze.” It is an argument, avoidance, isolation, or numbing out to control their anxiety in relationships. Without secure and safe emotional bonding, fear and shame constantly emerge without awareness and eventually harm intimate relationships and self-esteem.

When couples establish and maintain effective problem-solving habits, they are also more capable of coping with various problems, which in turn will enhance their relationship.

Generally, when relationships fail people blame either individuals or situations or both. For the most part, they totally miss the acknowledged role of unhealthy mental health as a possible factor of a broken relationship and symptoms get ignored until it starts affecting the relationship adversely.

Affects of Mental Illness relationships:

Burnout- People often reported experiencing emotional exhaustion as they manage the day-to-day of living with a family/partner with mental illness.

Trust and insecurity issue: Mental illness increases insecurity, decreases opportunity for bonding and results in unmet needs.

Intimacy issues: Staying with someone with mental illness may present challenges with intimacy along with difficulty in other aspects of life. Negative sex life often led distress in relationships.

Adverse effects on caregiver/ partner overall well-being: Mental health illness increases levels of stress and burn out feelings in the caregiver/spouse’s life. Secondary PTSD symptoms in a veteran’s family/spouse could be a good example related to this issue.

Degrades Biopsychosocial health: Mental health may increase lethargic feelings in couples, impact their ability to express empathy, increase feelings of anxiety, grief, and isolation.

Disrupted communication: a person who is dealing with mental health challenges feels emotionally overwhelmed and finds it hard to articulate their feelings. Sometimes they resist communicating out of fear of being abandoned and feelings of guilt. That led to the problem of miscommunication or lack of communication in relationships.

Codependency issues: Mental health issues increase codependency and develop a perceived sense of helplessness in mentally ill persons without the caregiver/ partner.

Therapy will provide an opportunity to individuals/family/couple to talk about their unmet needs and emotions in a safe therapeutic environment.

Therapy focuses on improving the attachment and bonding between family/partners. Such as, increasing awareness about how their early childhood experiences and attachment pattern influence their current mental state. People feel connected when they gain insight about their inner world, and understand how their response and behavior lead to disruption in relationships.

Therapy helps individuals to get insight about their/others underlying hopes and fears; increases empathetic understanding and builds friendship with increased admiration for each other.

Therapy assists individuals to improve positive communication and problem-solving skills. That empowers them to address core issues related to conflicts and focus on solutions rather than just stuck on problems.

Therapy guides individuals learn how to focus on self-reflection rather than blame, increases gratitude, enjoy positive aspects of the life/relationship, and promote stability and satisfaction while discouraging behaviors/responses that foster negativity.

Overall, people can help themselves and their family/partners by gaining insights and seeking professional help such as, individual/family/couples counseling. Therapy will help enhance their awareness and skills to deal with mental health challenges successfully, and promote mutual empathetic understanding and feelings of togetherness by restoring strong healthy relationships in their lives.

For most of us, relationships are the best part of life yet, at the same time, they also tend to be the most difficult part of life. If you are looking for the perfect relationship, you will definitely find yourself disappointed. Humans are inherently imperfect and subsequently, even if we try my best, we are bound to make mistakes and end up having conflicts.

What if I told you that the goal of a good relationship is not to avoid conflict but rather to become a master at managing it? Most likely, this is not what you want to hear but it is true. Drs. John and Julie Gottman have done research on interpersonal relationships since the 1970s and they have determined that there are certain ways the “masters” versus the “disasters” of relationships behave. The following information draws from this incredible and eye-opening body of research.
Take a moment to think of a relationship in my life that is 100% conflict free. Here is the list of the people in my life you didn’t mention: my partner, my family, my close friends, my co-workers…

Once you accept that conflict is an inevitable part of life, you can actively improve my communication and conflict-management skills. Consequently, you will find yourself in happier and stronger relationships.

“I feel…
(about)
and I need…”

It’s ok to complain but not to blame.

For example, if my partner has forgotten to buy eggs during their last grocery shopping trip, you could approach the situation in multiple ways:

Option 1: Blaming

“You always forget something when you go shopping. You just don’t care. And now you are going to tell me that you can’t be bothered to go back.”

Option 2: Complaining

“I am really upset that you forgot to get the eggs even though I put them on the list. Please go back to the store and get them.”

Responding to a complaint is the key to a productive conflict. There are 3 elements to this step.

Listen without prejudice or assumptions.

Validate what you hear in the “I feel” part. You don’t have to agree but show that you heard the way the other person feels and that you care about what they have to say.

Summarize what you heard and ask the other person if you got it right.

Example:

Listen. Silently. Do not say anything until the other person is done speaking. Maybe nod.

“I am sorry to see you so upset.”

3. Accepting Influence and Willingness to Compromise

According to Drs. Gottman, 69% of relationship conflicts are perpetual, meaning they have no solution, while 31% of relationship problems can be solved. “The masters of conflict”, those who have healthy and happy relationships, accept their partner’s influence and try to find compromises that permit both people in the relationship to feel satisfied.

Compromises can take all shapes and forms and can be as individual as a relationship. For example, finding a compromise can include saying “yes” to something that you might not feel excited about right now but is important to my friend. What matters is that it’s a true compromise and not a one-upmanship. It’s not a compromise if it feels like a “tit for tat” situation.

1. Accepting Influence:

Person 1: “I’d like to go to the car show this weekend. Want to join me?”

Person 2: “Ok. I know you love car shows and I’d like to spend time together.”

2. Willingness to Compromise:

Person 1: “You’ve been working long hours for the past few weeks. I feel lonely and need some quality time together, can we have dinner together tomorrow?”

Person 2: “I am sorry you feel lonely. I have to finish my project by Friday. Would it be ok if I promise you that we will spend time together this weekend?”

In a nutshell, the three elements of constructive conflict resolution are:

A. Softened Startup
B. Listening and Validating
C. Accepting Influence and the Willingness to Compromise

It might sound too good to be true but these simple communication techniques are used by “the masters” of relationships and have been proven to work over and over again.

Simply express my feelings in “I” statements, clearly state what has triggered these feelings in a non-blaming fashion and ask directly for what you need to feel better. Second, listening – really listening with an open mind – and validating are crucial to managing a difficult discussion in a productive manner. Validate the other person’s feelings – you don’t have to agree – and don’t make excuses or become defensive. Third, if there is no clear solution to a problem that both parties can easily agree on, it’s time to find a compromise. In good relationships, each partner has built a “bank account” of goodwill and, at times, will allow their partner to “cash in” some of that goodwill. Compromising is a key ingredient of happy relationships and with practice it will allow you to become a relationship “master” yourself.

Here are 10 tip on how to meet at least some of my touch needs during shelter-in-place:

Try to establish interpersonal connections via video or the phone by making an effort to connect. While you won’t be touching physically, connecting on an interpersonal level will make it easier to get through touch-deprived times.

If you have a bathtub, consider taking regular bubble baths. Get a brush to scrub yourself down or a soft sponge. Self-touch is a great way to meet some of my needs.

In the same vein, give yourself a massage. Easy places for self-massages are my hands and feet, my head, and my neck and shoulder area. Applying body lotion all over my body is a type of self-massage and can also leave my skin feeling and smelling nice.

Join an online fitness or yoga class. Physical exercise brings you in touch with my body. In the case of yoga, twists massage my inner organs and “touch” my body multiple-layers-deep; call that “internal touch”.

Sing with others in a virtual choir. Singing together has been shown to decrease feelings of isolation and release hormones that increase overall well-being.

Join the Daybreaker Dance Party community that helps people start the day happier by releasing dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins by dancing with an online community.

You might have heard about people “acquiring COVID-19 skills”. If you have extra time, consider learning something new. For example, Harvard University offers many free courses. Or learn how to make yogurt, kombucha, cook et.

A pet is a great way to enjoy some physical contact, connect and nurture. If you aren’t ready to commit just yet but would like to try it out, join the many Americans who have taken to fostering pets during the COVID-19 crisis.

With or without a pet, going outside into nature can facilitate a more positive outlook on life. “Getting in touch with nature” is more than an expression. Consider hugging a tree or walk barefoot on the grass.

Consider getting a weighted blanket. These blankets are often used in therapy offices and can help reduce anxiety by providing a sense of safety and comfort through their weight. Similar effects can be achieved by cuddling a stuffed toy, blanked or wearing clothing that feels great to the touch.

While there is no replacement for actual human touch, the ten ideas listed above can hopefully make it a little easier to tolerate this period of self-isolation.

Why are there so many jokes about relationships and marriage? It seems at least half are about sex and the loss of romance and passion. How is passion kept alive over the long haul? Psst! The secret, come closer, is . . . friendship! Surprised? If my partner has been a good friend lately you are more likely to be in the mood to play together and have fun. But with kids, work, and all the stress of modern life, you might ask, how the heck are we going to find time for that?

This can be challenging, and the answer to that is as specific as the couple, but here are some tips:

Date night. You might have heard of this and thought it was corny, but if you want to keep romance and passion alive, keep dating my partner! Dates are times to catch up and stay in tuned with my partner’s world. This is key to any friendships. “Psst…the secret, remember.”

Have moments through the day that you connect habitually, if only for a moment: a kiss goodbye before work, a kiss hello, make this one long and slow, a quick back scratch before sleep.

Check-ins at the end of the day about how my days went.

Going for a hike on the weekend.

Watch a movie together once a month and talk about it.

Cultivate a mutual hobby and do activities around this weekly or monthly.

You get the idea! Have activities and habits in my life together that cultivate closeness and friendship and the passion and romance in my life will thrive.

What makes sex exciting?

“What makes sex exciting is really the sense of someone allowing you into their life…it’s exciting because it’s permission.” – Alain de Botton (from an interview with Debbie Millman on Design Matters, 27 June 2016)

I know from the research that’s been done that a good sex life for a couple depends on how well the friendship is going lately. I’ve talked about how to keep passion alive before with consistent moments of connection (enter: Date Night!). What I love about Alain de Botton’s perspective here is that in the context of a long-term relationship, there are hundreds of ways to think about my connections as good foreplay. How do we let my partners into my lives? Are we intentional? Does it stop or have an expiration date? It certainly doesn’t have to! If we are keeping up my friendship, learning and exploring about one another, the excitement and permission never have to stop, they can deepen.

Here are some statistics about affairs & cheating compiled by Menstuff®:

2 percent of married men have strayed at least once during their married lives.

14 percent of married women have had affairs at least once during their married lives.

Younger people are more likely candidates; in fact, younger women are as likely as younger men to be unfaithful.

70 percent of married women and 54 percent of married men did not know of their spouses’ extramarital activity.

5 percent of married men and 3 percent of married women reported having sex with someone other than their spouse in the year 1997.

22 percent of men and 14 percent of women admitted to having sexual relations outside their marriage sometime in their past.

Note: the above adultery statistics of the prevalence of affairs were made more than a decade ago; so based on changes in society during the intervening years, the current percentage of the population who have had affairs is probably somewhat HIGHER. For instance, the continuing increase of women in the workplace and the increase of women having affairs on the Associateet means that the numbers for women having affairs is probably similar to those for men—about 60%.

I all know, or suspect, what some of the effects of affairs & infidelity are for couples, children and families. The cost of divorce, the stress for all involved, the time it takes to recover (if one recovers), all make for grim consideration. Is it possible to recover? If a couple wants to stay together, is it even a good idea to try?

It is possible for couples to rebuild their relationship after afairs. There is no guarantee (there are so many variables, like the willingness of each partner to put in the work required, the severity of the infidelity, etc.), but there are couples who are able to rebuild a healthy relationship after the bomb of infidelity has struck. Notice I mention the word “rebuild.” Once the betrayal of trust most certainly involved in infidelity is experienced, the couple must start from scratch. The first relationship (pre-infidelity) is destroyed and relationship # 2 must be built. But couples have been able to do exactly this and have been able to build a relationship that is healthy and thriving.

This takes a tremendous amount of work and most couples need support to accomplish this. It is wise to seek both professional help and any kind of other support that is available to take this task on. But given the cost of divorce and the other costs involved, it may well be worth it to try.
